Coach Terrie Gooch, physical education teacher at Franklin Academy Medical Sciences and Wellness Magnet School, was recently notified that they had been chosen as an awardee for a Marathon Kids National Grant. The school was chosen to receive funds totaling $2115.00, which will cover 141 runners. The funding is available in the form of a coupon code, redeemable through Marathon Kids, to cover the $15.00 per runner participation fee and cost of awards to be given upon completion of each marathon.
Marathon Kids’ mission is to get kids moving. Through running, the program shows kids they can achieve more than they ever thought possible and put them on the path to healthier lives. Participants work at their own pace to run, or walk, four marathons (104.8 miles). Training, rewards, tools and resources are available to keep kids moving. Running logs are kept until all the mileage equals 26.2 miles. An award is given to the child at that point, but what is next? Well, they keep running! Four awards are available throughout the school year.
